Why do we need a Will?

Last year, approximately 70 percent of the expatriates who died did not leave a Will, reducing the value of their families’ inheritances and causing untold problems and additional costs at a time when the last thing they needed was difficulty and worry.

Unless you have made a will:

• Your husband or wife may not automatically inherit your property andpossessions.
• Your family would be liable for a tax bill on a percentage of your estate.
• The task of carrying out your wishes may fall upon a person who is unsuitable for such responsibilities, or they may turn to a solicitor who will deduct a fee from the estate.
• A special gift, intended for a grandchild, friend or charity won’t necessarilyreach them.
• Your partner would receive nothing if you are unmarried, as the law treats you both as single.
• Guardianship of any children you have under 18 may be unclear, leaving thecourts to decide who looks after them.

But with a Will you control what happens. It spells out your wishes in the clearest terms and avoids any unpleasant or costly arguments about what you may or may not have had in mind.
